Professor Yizhi Liu, MD, PhD, is the Director of the State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology (SKLO) and Director of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center (ZOC) at the Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) in Guangzhou. He is also a Professor of Ophthalmology at SYSU, a standing committee member of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO), Vice-President of the Chinese Ophthalmological Society (COS), Deputy Director of the Cataract and Intraocular Lenses Division of COS, and a committee member of the Guangdong Ophthalmological Society.
Professor Liu has published more than sixty peer-reviewed scientific reports in high-impact scientific journals, such as Nature, Science, N Engl J Med, Proc Natl Acad Sci and Ophalmology. He serves as the Co-Editor-in-Chief of Molecular Vision, Associate Editor-in-Chief of Current Molecular Medicine. Professor Liu is internationally recognized for his major contribution to the development of novel cataract surgical techniques, such as Torsional mode phacoemulsification. He is also one of the pioneer ophthalmologists who initiated performing phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation in China. He has carried out approximately 200, 000 surgical operations for cataract patients.
Professor Liu’s research interests encompass both basic and translational research of cataract and other sight-threatening eye diseases. His current research focuses mainly on: (1) Genomic and epigenetic mechanisms regulating cellular senescence of cornea, lens and retina (2) Cell-based (including endogenous stem cell mobilization and cell replacement) and gene therapy to treat eye diseases (3) Precision medicine, such as building cohorts to investigate how individual variability in genes, environment, lifestyle and their interaction affect the progress of ocular diseases and the outcome of treatments.
Professor Liu is a recipient of numerous awards, including the National Award for Science and Technology Progress, Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award, Arthur Lim Award of Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO), Chinese Young Investigator Science and Technology Award, National Award of Young Researcher of Medical Science and Technology, Chinese Government Award of Excellence in Healthcare, Outstanding Young Scientist Award of Chinese Ministry of Health, and Guangdong Provincial Top Ten Outstanding Young Investigator Award. Professor Liu has received numerous grants from the National Basic Research Program of China, the Key Clinical Program of Chinese Ministry of Health, the Chinese National Natural Science Foundation and the Key Program of Natural Science Foundation in Guangdong.
