Dr. Carmeliet is an elected member of the German Academy Sciences Leopoldina, Dutch Royal Academy of Sciences, EU Academy of Sciences, and European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), and a Professor at VIB-University of Leuven, Belgium. Dr. Carmeliet is heading a world-leading research team with a major interest in vascular metabolism, (ocular and tumor) angiogenesis, regenerative (vascular) medicine, ocular diseases, and bioinformatic multi-omics analysis of endothelial cells in health and disease. Till now, Dr. Carmeliet has published over 676 scientific papers and has been awarded numerous awards, including the Heineken Prize for Medicine. Dr. Carmeliet’s first paper was immediately a breakthrough, reporting the crucial function of the angiogenic factor VEGF-A, which contributed significantly to the clinical translation. Dr. Carmeliet currently studies how endothelial cells change their metabolism and explores the therapeutic potential of targeting EC metabolism for anti-angiogenic strategies.
